A wagering requirement is a turnover target, and the arithmetic is less friendly than the headline suggests. A 100 unit bonus at 40x means 4,000 units must pass through the games before anything can be withdrawn. If the multiplier applies to deposit plus bonus rather than bonus alone, the same offer becomes 8,000 units of turnover. Two offers advertised as “40x” can differ by a factor of two, and the difference is one phrase in the terms.

Search the bonus terms for the phrase “deposit and bonus” or the shorthand “D+B”. When it appears, double your mental estimate of the work involved. This single distinction separates offers that are worth claiming from offers that exist to look generous in a comparison table.
Game weighting: the multiplier behind the multiplier
Not every unit you stake counts as a full unit toward the target. Weighting tables are standard, and while the exact percentages vary by operator, the shape is consistent across the industry.
- Slots usually count at or near 100 percent, which is why bonuses are effectively slot offers whatever the marketing implies.
- Roulette, blackjack and video poker count at a small fraction, frequently 10 percent or less, and are sometimes excluded outright.

The maximum bet clause, which voids more wins than any other rule
While a bonus is active, most operators cap the stake per spin or per hand. Exceed it once and the terms typically allow the entire bonus and everything won from it to be cancelled, even if the breach happened hours before the win.
Three details make this easy to break by accident:
- The cap applies per spin, so a single raised stake is enough. Playing carefully for an hour does not average it away.
- A feature buy is a single very large stake, and at many operators it breaches the cap by itself even where feature buys are not otherwise excluded.
- Autoplay set before you claimed the bonus keeps running at the old stake, which is a common and entirely avoidable way to lose a balance.

Many bonus offers limit what can be withdrawn from bonus winnings, often expressed as a multiple of the bonus amount. Clear a 40x requirement, finish with a large balance, and the excess above the cap can be removed before the payout. Find this number before you decide the offer is worth the turnover, because it sets a ceiling on the entire exercise.
Expiry
Wagering windows are typically measured in days. When the window closes, unfinished bonuses and the winnings attached to them are usually removed. A short window plus a high multiplier is the combination that forces larger stakes, which is precisely the behaviour the maximum bet clause punishes. Sticky and non-sticky bonuses behave differently
A non-sticky bonus keeps your deposit and the bonus in separate pots. You play the deposit first, and while you are on it you can usually withdraw at any moment, forfeiting only the untouched bonus. That structure is genuinely favourable and it is worth looking for by name.
A sticky bonus merges the two, so nothing can leave until the requirement is met. Most welcome offers are sticky. If the terms do not say which type you are claiming, assume sticky and plan accordingly.

- Open the weighting table and confirm the games you actually play count toward the target.

- Find the maximum cashout, which is the real ceiling on the offer.
- Note the expiry window and divide the turnover target by the days available.
- Check whether the bonus is sticky, and if the terms are silent, assume it is.
If step five produces a daily turnover figure that would require stakes above the cap from step three, the offer cannot be cleared as designed. That contradiction appears more often than you might expect, and spotting it takes about thirty seconds once you know to look.
